A fire broke out in the afternoon at a factory in Baddi industrial area in Himachal Pradesh's Solan district, killing one woman and injuring 31 others on Friday night, officials said.
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here issued a statement setting out the status of the victims of the Baddi factory fire acknowledged at PGIMER.
“On the evening of February 2, five patients reported to the Advanced Trauma Center PGIMER. These patients are reported to be victims of the fire incident at the Baddi factory. One person was reported to have died.”
“Charan Singh (22), Prem Kumari (27), Aarti (25) and Geeta (25), all residents of Baddi in Solan district, were found with minor burns on their spines and heads. All these patients are stable and are being provided with the necessary work-up and treatment,” PGIMER Medical Superintendent and Official Spokesperson Vipin Koushal said according to a PGIMER statement. .
Solan Deputy Commissioner Manmohan Sharma said more than 50 people were at the factory when the fire broke out. “People jumped from the first and second floors of the building to save their lives, sustaining multiple injuries to their hands, feet and even their spines,” he told reporters at the scene, adding that the cause of the fire was unclear. He added: The truth has not yet been determined, and a forensic team is investigating.
“While some of them have fled to their homes and their names have been ascertained, several others are still missing and attempts are being made to trace them,” Sharma said.
Witnesses said thick smoke oozing from the veneers hampered efforts to extinguish the fire, forcing workers to climb to the top of the building to ensure safety.
Fire engines struggled to extinguish the blaze, which lasted several hours, as flammable materials used in the manufacture of perfumes and other cosmetics also caught fire. The devastating fire broke out at NR Aroma around 2:45pm on Friday.
