Important points:
- FDA testing has determined that the product contains ingredients not listed on the product label.
- These types of products can cause serious side effects and drug interactions.
The FDA advises against using certain products advertised for arthritis and pain because some products have been found to contain hidden ingredients that can pose serious health risks. Consumers were advised to take precautions.
According to an FDA release, testing found multiple products containing active ingredients not listed on the product label. To protect consumers from unsafe products and to help consumers be more aware of what they are purchasing, the FDA is issuing public notices that include a small number of potentially dangerous products on the market. I've created a list.
In November, the FDA added Himalayan Pain Relief Tea, Tee Pee Herbal Tea, and Noto Ginseng Formula Special Grout Granules to this list.
“The results of our 10-year test show that retailers and distributors, including online marketplaces, are not effectively preventing these types of potentially harmful products from being sold to consumers. “This is clear,” the FDA said in a statement.
FDA testing found that Himalayan Pain Relief Tea contained two drug ingredients not listed on the product label: diclofenac, an NSAID, and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid.
The FDA warns that these products can cause serious side effects and interact with medications and dietary supplements that consumers are taking.
NSAIDs can cause serious gastrointestinal disorders as well as increased cardiovascular events. Corticosteroid use can impair a person's ability to fight infections and cause high blood sugar levels, muscle damage, and mental illness.
The FDA advises consumers to use caution before using all arthritis and pain management products because it cannot test every product sold online or in stores.
A complete list of potentially unsafe products warned by the FDA can be found here.
