The Giants and Athletics completed the trade on Friday.
San Francisco traded infielder/outfielder Jonah Cox to Oakland in a cash trade for veteran right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling, the teams announced Friday afternoon.
Stripling struggled in his first season with the Giants after signing a two-year, $25 million contract with San Francisco last offseason, going 0-5 with a 5.35 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 89 innings pitched. He finished with 16 walks. starting rotation and bullpen.
Stripling is scheduled to earn $12.5 million in 2024 after opting into the second and final year of his contract. Andrew Baggarley of The Athletic reported after the trade that San Francisco would pay $3.25 million of Stripling's salary as part of the deal.
Cox, 22, played center field, left field and shortstop in the minor leagues, batting .287/.366/.403 with two home runs, 15 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in AL Rookie Ball and Single-A. . Partnership in 2023.
Stripling has been training hard this offseason for the 2024 season, introducing a new pitch he calls the “death ball” into his repertoire that will make his debut in the green and gold for the first time.
The 34-year-old will join former Giants teammate and veteran left-handed pitcher Alex Cobb in Oakland, with whom the team officially signed a one-year contract on Friday.
