Kakamega Senator Boni Halwale has announced a new bullfighter to fill the void left after Inacio's death.
Inacio was killed with a spear the day after killing farmer Kizito Moi.
Mr. Halwale, who took office to reveal the news, emphasized the deep ties between the people of Barkhaia and their cultural traditions.
“Barkhaia culture hates vacuums,” he says.
“The young bullfighter Lumumba has stepped into the very big shoes of the late bullfighter Inacio,” he said.
However, the senator did not explain the choice of name.
Lumumba, described by the senator as a young bullfighter, is now tasked with continuing the legacy of his predecessor.
His introduction also shows the continuity of culture and the importance of maintaining traditional customs and beliefs in a community.
Bullfighting is a respected culture in the community.
Fighting bulls are given names for identification.
They are named after famous politicians, athletes, natural phenomena, or seasons.
Traditional Iskuti music and other festivities are held during the bullfighting competition.
Hundreds of spectators gather to cheer and blow traditional horns.
Prior to the event, bulls are properly prepared, fed and prevented from mating with heifers.
On D-day, traditional beer and a mixture of other ingredients and substances are given to get excited.
The owners also keep them under close surveillance to prevent rivals from casting evil spells on them.
