Dolal Mohamed Mohamud, Managing Director of Garissa Water and Sewerage Company, has been arrested on suspicion of falsifying his educational background.
Mohamud was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials on Thursday afternoon.
According to anti-corruption authorities, Mohamud is suspected of forging Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates to secure university admission.
Commission spokesperson Eric Ngunbi confirmed the arrest and said the suspect had obtained a grade D at KCSE but had forged a certificate showing he had obtained a grade C+.
Mohamud allegedly used forged documents to secure admission to the University of Nairobi.
Mr Ngunbi said the commission would recover all salaries and allowances Mohamud earned on the basis of invalid educational qualifications obtained using fake certificates.
Mr Mohamud is being held at Garissa Police Station pending his arraignment in court on Friday.
The arrest comes just three days after the EACC Chairman, Bishop David Oginde, warned against the use of fake academic papers for employment purposes.
Speaking in Kisumu, the head of the commission said the use of fake certificates was undermining the gains made in the education sector.
But he warned that the law would soon apply to people using fake certificates to obtain employment.
Bishop Oginde said those found to have lied about their educational background in order to obtain employment will have their monthly salaries, assets and resources earned during their service period recovered.
“Even if you work for 20 years, you will recover all the money you earned in the process,” Bishop Oginde said.
