National schools have been directed to submit their institution's bank details to enable parents to pay fees through the eCitizen platform to improve service delivery.
To expedite the start of the new tuition payment process, principals will have until next week, February 6, to submit details to the Office of the State Director of Basic Education.
In a circular sent to principals of national schools through the District Directorate of Education, Principal of Basic Education Berio Kipsang said parents should pay school fees through the eCitizen platform.
“The e-Citizen Directorate, in collaboration with the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA), the Ministry of Information, Communications and Digital Economy, and the National Treasury, is coordinating the implementation of all government services on the E-Citizen platform to enhance service delivery. ” states Dr. Kipusan's notice.
Details that school principals are required to provide include the institution's account name, bank, account number, bank code, and branch code.
However, Akello Misoli, secretary general of the Kenya Union of Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), rejected the directive, saying it lacked a policy framework and was doomed to failure.
“What we need is a robust system, not policies that create confusion in the management of school resources,” Misoli said.
Silas Obhatsa, president of the National Parents Association, welcomed the initiative, saying it would increase transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
But he called on the government to conduct regular audits to prevent misuse of funds.
