The Australian Government has announced a series of recommendations for updating MyGov digital IDs, confirming the introduction of passwordless login and committing to expand its use.
MyGov is used to access government services and has come under heavy criticism this year for its vulnerabilities to fraud and fraud, costing the government billions of dollars. The new roadmap for the digital ID system comes months after the government underwent a tough audit announced in January.
Among the set of 10 recommendations is the introduction of passkeys that leverage the FIDO2 authentication standard. Other recommendations include creating a new decision-making framework to help agencies incorporate digital services into the myGov system. The move will reduce duplication and integrate existing digital ecosystems, ACS Information Age reports.
The Labor Government has already committed to implementing the recommendations this year with an initial investment of A$10.8 million (US$7.3 million). This figure is part of a $134.5 million ($91.5 million) budget to operate and maintain the platform in 2023 and 2024.

We are taking a comprehensive approach,” the government minister said. Reduced service fees.
Last week, the government also announced it would rebrand its digital identity app myGovID, which allows users to access government services on the myGov platform, following a warning from an audit that users were confusing the two. did. The audit recommends either merging myGovID and myGov's front-end services into one app, or a complete rebranding of myGovID.
According to August statistics, the service now has 26 million users and a total of 3.3 million app users.
A Publicis Sapient survey of nearly 5,000 respondents found that 56 percent used the myGovID digital ID service. The majority of respondents, 89%, said they were satisfied with the service and 85% said they could perceive at least one advantage of using the service.
