As part of its plans to attract more tourists, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) has announced that one of its missions is to get more people to visit Barbados for sporting activities such as sailing and running. That's what I mean.
BTMI Chairman Shelley Williams said that sports tourism in Barbados has been growing year on year and against this backdrop, BTMI is committed to expanding and developing this sector. This is partly due to the evolving profile of Barbados' average visitor, she added.
She made this comment while speaking at the 2024 Barbados Sailing Week Closing and Awards Ceremony held at the Barbados Yacht Club on Bay Street yesterday.
Mrs Williams said that traditionally the island was seen as a sea, sand and sun holiday destination, but as the department had diversified its product offering in this area over the years, visitors now visited many destinations, including Barbados. He said that he started visiting for the calendar activities. Sailing Week, Run Barbados Marathon, Crop Over, Food and Rum Festival.
“You will have heard us mention several times how BTMI is getting more involved in sports tourism and driving our business through this…. We are well on our way. Barbados is rapidly becoming recognized as a destination for more than sun, sea and sand. We have successfully hosted international sporting events such as Barbados Sailing Week. .
“Barbados is on the world map, showing the world that there is a diverse range of sporting experiences that this island can offer. Our mission is to develop this objective in a way that attracts different types of tourists to this island. continue to position the country,” said the BTMI chairman.
Mr Williams, along with Barbados Sailing Association (BSA) President Renata Goodridge and Mt Gay Distilleries Global Marketing Director Laurent Cosson, congratulated Barbados Sailing Week 2024 as a “success” and “amazing”. He praised it.
They said the combination of sailing, social activities, Barbadian camaraderie and culture set Barbados Sailing Week apart from other racing experiences.
The overall winner of the 2024 Barbados Sailing Week was The Whistler, captained by Peter Lewis. Whistler on the J121 yacht also won the Mt Gay Sailing Round in Barbados, Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) Monohull Racing Class 1, and in the CSA Monohull Racing Class 3 he placed second.
Events held that week included remote control dragonflight, kitesurfing and wing foiling. Several social events were also held, including the Visit Barbados Sailing and Boardwalk Experience and the Red Cap Party.
The activity, which will run from January 13th to 24th, is hosted by the Barbados Cruising Club in partnership with BTMI, and includes Mt Gay Distillery Ltd., Old Dappy Food Ltd., CPM, Bajan Pure, Barbados – Yacht Club, Sagicor Health Management and Unseen Barbados Inc.
