Dea Tourism selects leaders for 2024

- Members of the Dare County Tourism Commission held their first meeting of 2024 on January 18th. The mission of the 13-member Board of Supervisors is to increase overnight visitor numbers to Dare County's Outer Banks during off-peak months.Dare County Tourism Office Photos
The first agenda item for the Jan. 18 Dare County Tourism Commission meeting included introducing new members and selecting the 2024 steering committee.
Joining the board this year are Southern Shores City Councilman Mark Batenick, Kill Devil Hills Commissioner Terry Gray, Outer Banks Association of Realtors President John Head, and Dare County Commissioner Wally Ober. Mann and rank-and-file member Tess Judge.
With all full board members seated, there was a unanimous vote for the members of the Tourism Committee Steering Committee. Monica Thibodeau was elected chair, David Hynes was elected vice chair, Tonia Cohen was elected secretary, Todd Clissold was elected treasurer, and Dennis Robinson was elected deputy treasurer.
Based on our budget and financial review, it appears that occupancy was slightly lower in November and meals were significantly lower. However, a closer look reveals that this decrease is actually due to delayed reporting of some meals in October 2022, making the situation in November 2022 inaccurate. With that adjustment, the numbers show a stronger increase in meals this November.
Several calendar days are reserved on the event venue's preliminary schedule.

At the end of the meeting, several board members gave eulogies to former board member and Manteo Mayor Bobby Owens.
With the work completed, the board has scheduled its next meeting for February 15th. Other meeting dates for 2024, subject to change, are:
