In the Free State of Bavaria, the marketing of last season's edible potatoes and onions is currently in its final stages. “German onions in pack sizes 50-70 and 70-90 are still available in sufficient quantities. So far we have been able to cover the needs of LEH customers with local products without any problems. Price situation “Despite high market prices, sales of both products are at a stable and stable level,” says Ulrich Goldstein, managing director of the packaging company of the same name in Sellingen, Lower Franconia. speaks.
BigBags Local Onions: Due to low prices, red onions have gained market share over the past year, thus expanding the area under cultivation.
The last onions harvested last year will be on the market in the 24th week, Goldstein predicts. After that, the company will mainly rely on imported onions from New Zealand. “Due to the March floods, there should be fewer shipments of products to Europe this year. However, as a mid-sized packaging company, we should be able to meet demand without too much trouble. Onions imported from Spain and Chile are On the other hand, it is more suitable for the catering industry. But that is not the market segment in which we operate.”
Packaged onions for food retail. For both potatoes and onions, he said, trends have been clearly moving toward smaller packaging containers for years now.
Germany's early potato season in the starting blocks
In the potato sector, early table potatoes are increasingly dominating the market. Mr. Goldstein: “The first loose-skinned potatoes from the Palatinate will be on the market from the 23rd week onwards, but we will not start with the early, hard-skinned potatoes for our food retail program until two weeks later.” Cold field conditions have delayed the start of the early potato harvest by about a week in the Palatinate, Lower Rhine and Lower Saxony. The same is true for growing storage potatoes, according to Goldstein. “Therefore, the main harvest will also be delayed, but we cannot predict at this point how much of a delay.”
Mr. Goldstein's company has been based in Sellingen in Lower Franconia for many years.
Meanwhile, early potatoes from Egypt are mostly packed into Goldstein's halls. “In Egypt, but also in Spain and Israel, volumes have been suppressed this year, and as a result they continue to be sold at high prices. They are about 25% above last year's levels. Talking about further price adjustments, “That's very speculative. I can imagine you're hitting your pain threshold,” explains the potato merchant.

Decline in edible potato cultivation
Bavaria has traditionally been one of the most important potato-growing regions in (southern) Germany. Goldstein observes that in recent years, growing potatoes, especially for food, has lost importance. “This is precisely related to several factors, including the lack of agricultural successors, small-scale farming, and the attractiveness of alternative crops. However, people with the know-how and technology will continue to focus on growing edible potatoes. I guess.”
