Two people were killed and two others, including a 17-year-old boy, were seriously injured when a fire broke out at a firecracker manufacturing factory in Vachakakarapatti village in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday, police said.
Police have identified the deceased as P Kalliraj (20) of Kanniseripudur area of Virudhunagar and K Veerakumar (50) of Mudalipati area.
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the accident occurred when workers were mixing chemicals and the friction caused the fire to spread at the Taramuthu fireworks factory.
Police and fire authorities were alerted and teams quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. The team rushed the injured to Virudhunagar Government Medical College where they are undergoing treatment. According to police, Saravanakumar from Kaniselipudur sustained 90 per cent burns, while Sandaramoorthy from Inamredhyapatti sustained 70 per cent burns.
According to officials, three work sheds at the factory were completely destroyed. Further investigation into this incident is ongoing.
On the other hand, Prime Minister MK Stalin INR300,000 yen each to the families of the deceased INR50,000 each to the relatives of the injured.
