Businesses are counting their losses after a fire broke out at Nairobi's City Stadium on Tuesday night, January 30th.
The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the incident and said the fire occurred at the following locations: Jogoo road rotary.
“A fire incident has been reported near City Stadium in Nairobi County, affecting local businesses and a response team has been activated,” the Red Cross said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
In a video shared by a witness, onlookers could be seen standing in the distance. the fire caused havocleaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
A fire brigade believed to be affiliated with the Nairobi County Government was also seen nearby.
However, it is not yet clear whether firefighters have done enough to extinguish the blaze, which appears to be worsening.
Volunteers could also be seen shoving onlookers back to control the crowd.
Earlier, some people in Kenya had shared photos of rising smoke online, with most trying to pinpoint the location of the fire.
Most of the victims were small-scale businesses and second-hand clothes sellers, and the amount of damage has not yet been determined.
Last year, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja promised to build a fire station at Gikomba Market to control recurring fires around the area.
The station was expected to serve not only the market but also other major facilities in the Nairobi CBD suburbs and along Jogu Road.
