A former police officer working at Erwak police station in Mandera district suddenly disappeared and was later found in Turkana district's Rolgam district, where he now makes a living as a construction worker.
Former police officer Clement Elm said in an interview with Citizen TV that he decided to quit his job after he narrowly escaped death in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on the job, and sadly lost the life of a colleague. He revealed that he had decided to.
“Mimi Nlikwa Nafanya Kajikwa Criminal Division Hapo Erwak, Na Nlikwa Nafanya Kaji Za will escort Jinjin,” he said.
“Ilikwa Gari Inajitokeza Kwenda Escort Sasa Gari Yetu Ikakanyaga IED Ikaripuka Kira Mutu Akafaliki…Nakumbuka Rafiki Young Geoffrey Ruto…Nirikaa Nikaona Sasa Kama Fuyu・Amefāriki nikāona ni kama next ni mimi.”
Surviving a near-death experience is just the beginning. The ensuing misfortune weighed heavily on his mind and affected his work.
The final blow comes at the funeral of the aforementioned deceased colleague, where he is forced to quietly take off his shoes and return to the village.
Dr. Moses Kimenchu, a consultant at police headquarters, has been actively pursuing the officer for many years.
Dr Kimenchu revealed that Elm was battling depression stemming from a traumatic experience on the job.
“Depression is real. We want officers who are having a hard time to talk, and we want this officer to get back to work,” he said.
As the counseling department arranges for psychological treatment for Elm ahead of his reappointment to the police force, a rally calls on the human resources department to highlight the need to strengthen employee mental health and implement an employee counseling strategy. The voices are echoing across departments.
