In a statement on Wednesday, January 31, the government directed Airbnb to register with the Tourism Regulation Authority (TRA).
The government said the decision was due to an increase in homicides being reported in short-term rental properties.

“In light of the recent alarming murders in short-term accommodation rentals, including Airbnb, all operators are required to register with the Tourism Regulation Authority (TRA) with immediate effect,” the government said. .
The government said this process is designed to ensure all accommodation meets the highest standards of safety and security for guests.
According to the directive, the National Government Administrator (NGAO), in cooperation with the TRA, is tasked with inspecting all registered properties from February 5, 2024.
“We will then work with booking platforms to restrict unregistered rentals and further impose tough penalties, including fines and cancellations, in case of non-compliance.
Neighborhood associations are encouraged to work closely with law enforcement agencies for effective enforcement. “This includes information sharing, joint inspections and a coordinated response to violations of safety standards,” the statement added.
