Funding is provided by core businesses, building owners and tenants to address security issues.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) grants fund permanent property improvements that enhance security and crime prevention measures.
The program provides 50% matching funding up to $5,000 per successful applicant.
City of Lethbridge Urban Renewal Manager Crystal Scheidt said Thursday that applications will be accepted until funding is exhausted. In that case, the city will post on its website that it is no longer accepting applications.
Scheidt said $50,000 was originally allocated for 2024, but an additional $100,000 was reallocated to the grant pot.
This grant focuses on urban centers.
Eligible projects are those that consist of permanent security enhancements such as security fencing, lighting, and locking systems. These include shutters, shatterproof glass, bars, gates, etc.
The project must be located on a front-facing lot between 1 Ave. N. and 9 Ave. N. on private property in the downtown, warehouse district, or 13 St. N.
Applicants must own the property in question, be a commercial tenant with a current business license in the city, or both. Additionally, the applicant/property must not be in arrears with city taxes, utilities, or other city taxes.
Excluded expenses include items such as:
Ongoing operations, general maintenance, and lifecycle costs.
Non-permanent finishes and equipment, including rentals.
Construction machinery and related hardware, tools and machinery.
• Construction insurance and permits.
– Administration, financial reporting, fundraising, application preparation, and
Similar activities.and
– Expenses incurred before the date of approval of the subsidy application.
Successful applicants will have one year to complete their project and no retroactive funding will be granted.
Applicants must submit current photos of the property as well as “after” photos showing the completed project. Funding will be provided following approval of CPTED's final report and city inspection.
