Factory resetting your MacBook erases all personal data from your device and reinstalls a clean, unimpaired version of macOS.
Thankfully, it's easy to complete a factory reset on your MacBook. Apple has generally streamlined the process quite a bit. However, there are some different steps depending on whether his MacBook has Apple silicon or the Apple T2 security chip. Whether you're running macOS Monterey or later also affects this step, albeit slightly.
First, check if your MacBook has the “Erase All Content and Settings” feature. In that case, follow the steps below depending on your OS.
MacBook Air and MacBook Pro: Everything about the 2023 MacBook
For macOS Monterey:
step 1: Select the Apple menu in the upper left corner and click System Preferences.
Step 2: Select “Erase all content and settings”.
For macOS Ventura or later:
step 1: Select the Apple menu in the upper left corner and click System Preferences.
Step 2: Go to General in the sidebar and click Transfer or Reset.
Step 3: Select “Erase all content and settings”.
[すべてのコンテンツと設定を消去]After you select , you must sign in using your administrator credentials, including your password. Apple also provides a notification that everything has been erased, including your Apple ID, Touch ID, Apple Wallet, and Find My settings.
This is also your chance to start a Time Machine backup if you wish. Select “Open Time Machine” to create a backup of your files and information. However, you will need an external storage device.
Confirm and select “Erase all content and settings” again to begin the factory reset. Your MacBook will then be activated and restarted, starting a new setup process.
Use Disk Utility
If your MacBook does not offer the Erase All Content and Settings feature, you can use the Disk Utility tool. To erase all content, follow these steps:
step 1: With your MacBook turned off, turn it on and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys. Repeat this until you see the Apple logo.
Step 2: Enter your administrator password and select Disk Utility.
Step 3. Go to Macintosh HD in the sidebar and click Erase.
Step 4: Enter Macintosh HD in the Name field and select APFS format or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Step 5. Select Erase Volume Group or Erase, depending on what appears. When prompted, enter your Apple ID to begin the wipe.
Your MacBook is now completely wiped and ready for a new owner. Now you can donate, sell, or gift your MacBook to someone without worrying about accessing your residual data.
