A luxury cruise ship carrying at least 2,500 passengers has docked in Mombasa, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) said on Saturday.
KPA said in a statement on the X platform that the ship, named MSC Poesia, belonged to the Mediterranean Shipping Company.
The cruise ship, which entered Mombasa Port, was carrying 2,500 passengers and 1,000 crew members, 20 of whom were Kenyans.
“The 294-meter-long MSC Poesia is one of the largest cruise ships to enter the port, just one month after another luxury ship, Norwegian Dawn, called at the port,” KPA said.
“In order to add value and be able to support cruise tourism, KPA will include a state-of-the-art cruise terminal not only for cargo transportation but also to consolidate Kenya’s position as a hub for cruise tourism in Africa. We have invested in the necessary infrastructure.”
Tourism Minister Alfred Mutua and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nasir welcomed tourists to the coastal town.
“We will continue to strive to make Mombasa a global tourist destination by providing a clean and welcoming environment that our guests will want to come back to again and again,” Governor Nasir said.
