NAIROBI, Kenya, February 3 – There is nothing worse than losing your job. This can be difficult, especially if you have no other options.
This is the challenge that Matthew Koinange received at the time. Koinange, who was working at Masin Muliro University, lost his job.
Despite early difficulties, he was determined to create something for himself and always respected management.
Please fast forward. Years later, he is the proud business owner of a Kawanware convenience store. Mat's Retail Store carries housewares, groceries, stationery and personal care products.
Always open to trying new ideas, he was drawn to Kapu's mission to help the community save money last September.
Kapu is an online business-to-business (B2C) e-commerce platform that allows individuals and businesses to purchase products at affordable prices.
Through this platform, buyers save 10% on their grocery purchases compared to traditional e-commerce sites, kiosks, and supermarkets.
Founder Sam Chapat previously said the startup leverages economies of scale by sourcing products directly from manufacturers, offering ultra-cheap products.
Products that can be ordered via the platform include oil, sugar, flour, toiletries, and more.
Koinange says people can also earn a living by joining the platform.
So how did he come across this startup?
He first learned about Kap when the startup approached him. Without hesitation, he decided to give it a try.
One of the conditions for joining Kapu is having a shop and a smartphone.
To date, we have served over 100 customers.
Mr. Kap pays him on a commission basis. For example, on every sale he is paid an 80% commission.
Some of the most purchased products include personal care products, stationery, food stuffs, and household items.
Why should Kenyans choose Kapu?
The 34-year-old says Kenyans should adopt kapu because they are reliable and easy to handle. Our prices are reasonable and we also offer home delivery.
He also advises other businesses to register as Kapu agents to enjoy the numerous benefits.
He feels that the platform allows him to reach more customers online and makes it easier.
He says Kapu's success as an agent was driven by his ability to communicate its services to clients. Through training with his field sales team, he became a more confident salesperson and was able to increase sales for his own stores and Kapu distributors.
His future goals are to expand his business and reach more customers.
