Illegal beer producers and sellers in Murang'a must close up shop and go about their legal business as the fight against the trade cannot be stopped.
This is the stark warning from Murang'a MP Betty Maina and Senator Joe Nyutu as officials and the public are shocked by the rising number of deaths from moonshine in neighboring Kirinyaga County.
At least 10 people were confirmed dead, and five people lost their eyesight after drinking suspected adulterated alcohol.
Speech in Ichilu, Khandala constituency Wednesday During the distribution of avocado seedlings, Maina said alcoholism is detrimental to the growth and development of any society, adding that it is of utmost importance that all stakeholders participate in this fight.
“The women of Murang'a will fight illegal beer to the bitter end because it is unacceptable that young men, women and even the elderly die from consuming illegal beer while sellers and manufacturers thrive on this trade. ” she said.
“We are tired of burying our sons and what happened in neighboring Kirinyaga County must not be repeated here.”
Maina expressed gratitude to the local government and police for their continued efforts, including arresting illegal beer traders.
The women's representatives provided 15 water tanks to 15 public institutions and gave blankets and food to more than 1,000 elderly men and women.
Senator Nyutu called on liquor licensing authorities to take strict action, saying some beers contain harmful substances and should not be put on the market.
“We must save our generation. We join Vice President Ligati Gachagua in this fight and pledge to crack down on illegal beer manufacturers and traders in the Mount Kenya region. ” he said.
“We have to take strict measures because we will not allow killer beer in this area.”
At the same time, Kenya Revenue Authority Chairman Anthony Mwaura said the economy cannot be developed with revenue from illegal beer.
“Stop collecting bribes to keep the illegal beer trade going. Together we can save our generation and local governments must keep an eye on these illegal beer and drug dealers. No,” he said.
Mr Mwaura also called on parents to encourage their children to pursue education to secure their future and seize the many opportunities available around the world.
