STARKVILLE, Miss.—The dean of the Mississippi College of Education has become a new member of the state's Commission on Teacher and Administrator Education, Certification, Licensing and Development.
Teresa Jiro has been appointed by the Mississippi State Board of Education to an initial four-year term until December 2028 to represent Mississippi's 3rd Congressional District. The commission is affiliated with the Mississippi Department of Education.
Members of the Licensing Commission make recommendations to the State Board of Education regarding standards for the training, certification, and licensing of educators and continuing professional development for those who teach or perform work of an educational nature in Mississippi. It plays an important role as it is responsible for Public school.
“Dr. Jayro is a model of servant leadership and I know she will be an excellent member of the Committee on Teacher and Administrator Education, Credentials, Licensing and Development,” said MSU President Mark. E. Keenum said. “We are grateful for her willingness to serve in this important role and for her many other contributions to our university and the School of Education.”
Jiro is a veteran MSU administrator, professor, and elementary classroom teacher who was appointed dean in 2021 after serving as associate dean for 10 years. She previously worked as the university's Director of Clinical/Field-Based Instruction, Licensing and Outreach. She first joined the faculty of MSU's Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1997 after she taught kindergarten through second grade for 13 years in the Louisville Municipal Separate School District and the Philadelphia Public School District.
She received her Ph.D. She earned a Bachelor of Education degree with an emphasis in Elementary Education and an Education Specialist degree with an emphasis in Educational Leadership, both from Mississippi State. She also earned her master's degree and bachelor's degree in elementary education from MSU.
