We encourage everyone living in BC to participate in the BC Demographic Survey to identify systemic racism in government services.
The survey is online and available in 15 languages at: https://antiracism.gov.bc.ca/bcdemographicsurvey
Those without access to a computer or smartphone can participate in the survey by calling toll-free: 1 833 376-2452.
“We hear from many Indigenous and racialized groups that they are being left behind because government services are not designed with them in mind. We continue to work to create a fair state,” said Minister Lisa Bearle. of citizen services. “The BC Census is the next step in confronting systemic bias and advancing racial equity in BC. If you live in BC, build a province that works for everyone. To support us, please take part in our survey.”
Information collected through the BC Demographic Survey helps the BC government deliver stronger, more accessible, and more comprehensive programs and services for everyone. This research was developed through engagement with Indigenous, Black, and other racialized communities. Includes questions related to race, ethnicity, ancestry, and other areas of identity.
Attorney General Niki Sharma said: “Everyone deserves fair access to the support they need.” “Through data collection, we need to understand how systemic racism manifests in government services. The BC Census will help identify gaps in data so that everyone can understand how government programs and You will be able to access the service.”
The BC Demographic Survey is conducted by BC Stats, the province's authoritative source of statistics about BC's people and economy. Personally identifying information is removed when survey responses are combined with information about government programs and services.
This will enable anti-racism research around the priorities raised by the Indigenous Peoples and Anti-Racism Data Commission. These research priorities were announced on May 29, 2023.
“We all need fair and equal opportunities to thrive,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives. “However, many people experience barriers that make it even harder to move forward. By participating in the BC Demographic Survey, we can better understand where people experience barriers when accessing public services. We will be able to understand them, address them and build a better BC for everyone.”
The survey is voluntary, but all people, regardless of ethnicity, are encouraged to complete it. The more people who complete the survey, the more accurate and precise the data will be to identify and eliminate systemic racism in British Columbia's government services.
The province changed its BC logo and rolled out a digital awareness campaign to show how participating in research can help close gaps in services.
Continued community engagement is at the core of the Anti-Racist Data Act. The state also provides grants to raise awareness of the study within a network of community organizations. Interested community organizations should email arda.engagement@gov.bc.ca.
The survey, which is open until September 29, 2023, aims to work with Indigenous and racialized communities to eliminate systemic racism and build a better, more inclusive state. It is part of a cross-government initiative in the state.

“This year's BC Vital Survey is the first to be conducted under the Anti-Racism Data Act. Data collection on this law and the impact of racism is a highly disaggregated effort that my office has. It is based on a “grandmother's perspective'' framework for data collection.''
