Safaricom CEO Ndegwa appointed as Chancellor of Meru University
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa on Friday succeeded Equity Group CEO Dr James Mwangi as the second chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST).
The inauguration ceremony will take place following the appointment of President William Ruto on November 1, 2023.
Mr Ndegwa said Safaricom would partner with universities on internships for students and support them in the technology sector.
“As I embark on this new journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and dedication to furthering the mission of Meru University of Science and Technology. “We are excited about the opportunity to work together to build a strong foundation of academic integrity and innovation,” he said.
The telephone company's chief said the company also intends to participate in other university activities and work with community members for the benefit of students.
“We partner with 14 other institutions to help university students understand the future from a techno perspective. Our annual event, called “Decode,'' gives students an opportunity to see what's happening in the real world. “I try to get people to understand that,” he said.
“We look forward to working to inspire those interested in technology and ensuring that the way we train students is beneficial to them,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Romanus Odhiambo, who was present along with other staff at the institute, said Mr Ndegwa's commitment to technology as a tool to respond to society's needs was commendable.
“His visionary leadership at Safaricom, marked by its strategic transformation into a purpose-driven technology company, is an inspiration to all of us. “We are excited about the potential for collaboration and growth,” he said.
MUST was accredited and established as a full-fledged university on March 1, 2013.
