The February 8th NBA trade deadline is closer than ever after another heartbreaking loss for the Warriors.
After Golden State lost 141-134 to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night at State Farm Arena, Stephen Curry said it was up to the players to quiet trade speculation with their on-court performance. reaffirmed its position.
“It’s up to us as players to perform and play at the level we should. [trade] It might make the conversations and decisions a little bit easier,” Curry told reporters. [general manager], I'm not in a position to be asked that question every day. My job is to go out there and perform. The closer you get [the trade deadline]that's the nature of the NBA, you can't be naive and act like the call wasn't made. ”
Despite Curry's unwavering stance that players' destinies are in their own hands, the 15-year NBA veteran also has concerns about the business side of the league and what happens when a team underperforms at an organizational level. He admitted that he understands what happens.
“For us players in the locker room, we have to be able to control what we can control,” Curry explained. “Until we're told otherwise, or a decision is made, it's up to us to go out there and perform and maintain our position as a legitimate team that can win.
“If you don’t, you’re going to approach things differently when the opportunity presents itself.”
Curry was sensational against the Hawks on Saturday, scoring a season-high 60 points on 22-of-38 shooting, including an incredible barrage from the 3-point line in the fourth quarter.
Golden State's loss to Atlanta on Saturday moves the Warriors to 21-25 in the 2023-24 NBA season and currently sits in the 12th seed in the Western Conference Playoffs.
Manager Steve Kerr recently said he doesn't envision Golden State making any big moves before the deadline. But losing a game like this without a superstar without notable help could impact the Warriors' brain trust decisions in the coming days.
For now, Curry and the Warriors will look to work things out with the pieces they have in-house. They have a chance to get back in the win column on Monday when they take on the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center.
