Kerala hailed as a sustainable tourism hub: Riyas
Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas acknowledged the synergy between the goals of Kerala tourism and the theme of the National Tourism Day, affirming the state's global reputation as a sustainable and inclusive tourism hub and an experiential tourism destination. He emphasized that he is setting a lasting example.
National Tourism Day is celebrated on January 25 every year to raise awareness of the country's economic benefits from tourism. This year's theme was “Sustainable Travel, Timeless Memories.”
“This year's theme aligns seamlessly with recent initiatives in Kerala and the outstanding achievements of the state's Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission. The focus is on engagement and attracting tourists while protecting the natural and cultural heritage,” Riyas said.
“The Global Responsible Tourism Awards 2023, the most prestigious honor bestowed on the state of Kerala for sustainable and inclusive tourism initiatives, has been awarded to the State of Kerala. This is a great support for efforts to be inclusive of women,” the Minister said.
The Global Responsible Tourism Awards 2023 was created by the Responsible Tourism Partnership and the International Center for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) in the Best Local Content, Food and Crafts category.
The award is also given for connecting women-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to tourism activities and ensuring effective marketing of indigenous products.
Riyas said the STREET (Sustainable, Tangible, Responsible, Experiential, Ethnic and Tourism) project is emerging as a model for sustainable and community-focused tourism initiatives in India and abroad. He further pointed out that with a creative approach, the state has managed to maintain consistent tourist inflow to Kerala.
