Nairobi, Kenya, February 7, 2024 — US Ambassador to Kenya Margaret Whitman visited the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Women's Empowerment Center in Lodwar. The center is a hub of resilience and empowerment, serving as a safe space for women and girls in the community to receive vocational training. and important psychosocial support services, especially for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
Ambassador Whitman, the US Ambassador to Kenya, said:

Women and girls in Turkana County are affected by a number of factors that undermine gender equality in the region. Traditional perception is that girls' education is optional, and the latest statistics show that only 41 percent of young Turkana women aged 15 to 24 can read and write (compared to young men of the same age). (this rate is approximately 70%). Additionally, harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, gender-based violence, and child marriage remain prevalent. Forty-two percent of Turkana women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, compared to 34 percent of Kenyan women. The Lodwar Women and Girls Safe Space is supported by the U.S. government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and highlights the collaborative efforts of the United States and Kenya in promoting sustainable development and empowering women. .
