Under current law, if a murderer brings a weapon to a crime scene with the intent to kill, he or she can be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.
There is no justice for women
Every week, two women die as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more suffer physical or emotional abuse from their husbands or partners. Anyone who commits such a crime has the right to feel the full force of the law.
However, the criminal justice system currently fails to assist victims of domestic homicide. Under current law, if a murderer brings a weapon to a crime scene with the intent to kill, he or she can be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.
But if you use a weapon to kill someone in your own home, the starting point is 15 years. This is not the only flaw in the domestic violence justice system.
A quarter of domestic homicides are caused by strangulation, but strangulation is not considered an aggravating factor by judges when sentencing perpetrators. If we want to protect women and see justice done, the laws must change.
A justice system that fails to recognize the seriousness of domestic violence is not a justice system worthy of its name.
just the beginning
Starting today, it is illegal to own an XL Bully dog in public unless it is spayed, registered, and muzzled.
This new law represents a significant victory for our campaign to end the threat posed by dangerous dogs. I'm glad the government intervened, but there should have been so many deaths and injuries before the government intervened.
XL Bully dogs are especially dangerous, but it's not just breeds and crossbreeds that pose a threat. That is why we need to review the Dangerous Dogs Act.
glass act
Major beer companies are taking advantage of tax breaks to lower the alcohol content of their beers. We hope they will pass on the savings to their customers. Everyone raises a glass to it.
