The White Sox have traded reliever Gregory Santos to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-hander Prelander Velor, outfielder Zach DeLoach and the No. 69 pick in the 2024 draft, ESPN's Jeff Passan reports.
Minutes after the Santos trade was announced, the White Sox initiated another trade. They acquired 26-year-old outfielder Dominic Fletcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for pitching prospect Cristian Mena.
Santos, 24, played his first and only season with the White Sox in 2023. He pitched 66.1 innings in 60 games, posting a 2-2 record and a 3.39 ERA. He struck out 66 batters and gave up 17 walks. He is best known for his fastball, which exceeds 160 miles per hour.
DeLoach, 25, is a minor league outfielder who has been in the Mariners' farm system since 2021. He played the entire 2023 season in Triple-A, his first season at that level. He played in 138 games and had a batting average of .286 and an OPS of .868.
He played the majority of his games in right field in Triple-A, which could mean the Sox plan to deploy him in right field. They said this offseason that they would be happy with Gavin Sheets protecting right field. But a faster, more athletic defender could serve Southside better.
Velour, now 23, played most of the 2023 season in Double-A. However, he appeared in only two games in the majors, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. He posted a 2.89 ERA, 22 shutouts and six saves at Double-A last season.
