At least four members of a family were killed in a road accident on the Bomet-Olengruone road near Tenwek Bridge on Thursday.
Bomet Central Sub-county Police Commander Musa Omar said the four were driving a saloon car when they were hit by a truck in the middle of a bridge and fell into the river.
He added that both vehicles were traveling in the approximate direction of Siribwet when the accident occurred.
Omar said all occupants of the saloon car were killed by the impact of the car plunging into the deep water.
Like many other places, the region was hit by heavy rains, causing rivers to swell.
Witnesses said the car plunged into the water and was swept about 50 meters away by heavy flooding before being stopped by trees along the river.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene and police said they were looking for him to record a statement as part of their investigation into the tragedy.
Police and members of the public were able to recover three bodies.
They included one man and two women.
According to police, the minor's body is still missing.
The body was moved to the Longisa Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy and accident investigation.
The remains of the ill-fated car were towed to Bomet Police Station.
This is the latest similar incident in the country amid an ongoing campaign to address the threat.
Fatal crashes are on the rise as authorities and other stakeholders call for steps to address the trend.
In the past four months alone, more than 1,300 people have been killed and dozens more injured in separate crashes, according to National Transportation Safety Administration statistics.
