Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a deadly neurological disease that affects deer, elk and other cervid species, has made an eerie outbreak in California. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently confirmed the presence of CWD in deer in Madera and Inyo counties, marking the first recorded case in the Golden State.
The findings, announced May 7, demonstrate the alarming prevalence of the disease, which has now been detected in 34 states. Symptoms of CWD include weight loss, difficulty coordinating, excessive thirst, behavioral changes, and ultimately death. Amazingly, there is no cure or vaccine.
CWD originated in captive deer at a research facility in Colorado in the 1960s and has since spread across the United States, posing a significant threat to deer and elk populations. Once established in an area, CWD can persist in the environment for years, making containment difficult.
Although there is currently no evidence that CWD is transmissible to humans, caution is advised, especially given its similarities to other prion diseases such as BSE and mad cow disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that if CWD is transmitted to humans, it is most likely transmitted by eating infected deer or elk. In response to this development, CDFW emphasizes the importance of vigilance among hunters and the general public. Hunters are required to test harvested deer and elk for CWD before consuming them. Additionally, the public is encouraged to report any signs of disease in deer or elk populations.
