hyderabad: The Congress government has started steps to fulfill Rahul Gandhi's promise to conduct a caste census in the state, with the TS Backward Classes Commission on Wednesday holding a meeting with professors, former IAS officers, experts and activists. Discussions are planned.
Parliamentary Secretary B. Bala Maya Devi requested representatives of the People's Committee for Caste Census to present their views and suggestions during the meeting. Earlier, the Revanth Reddy government had directed the committee to prepare an action plan for the census.
The People's Committee had previously asked the premier to enact legislation to ensure the census was taken seriously and address potential legal issues. It also recommended setting up a Savitribai Phule Caste Survey Committee of up to seven members to conduct a socio-economic survey of all castes.
Rahul Gandhi had emphasized the importance of caste census for fair budget allocation and representation in government positions. “This is like an X-ray that reveals the proportion of BCs, SCs and STs,” he said at an election rally in the state.
Committee member Professor Inukonda Thirumali suggested postponing local government elections until the census is completed. The committee includes Professor Padmaja Shaw, Professor S. Simhadri, Professor K. Murali Manohar, Professor P. Narendra Babu, former IAS officer Mr. Akunuri Murari, Dr. Venu Yadav Nagra, Mr. Devara Samaiah, Satish.・Includes academics and experts such as Mr. Kotte and Mr. P. Mariah. Professor PL Vishweshwar Rao met Revanth Reddy two days ago to discuss the initiative and called for holding the first consultative meeting with the BC Commission on May 22.
