DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) – Students at Mark Denman Elementary School in Danville participated in Career Day on Friday. This is part of the AVID program, which helps children find more opportunities.
This is College and Career Advancement through Personal Decision Day, also known as AVID Day. And Mark Denman Elementary School's motto is to enable students to live lives full of possibilities.
Second grade teacher Heidi Crane said the event helps children understand that they can achieve their dreams if they are responsible and organized.
Crane said that before the coronavirus outbreak, he would have guests at the school to talk about his career.
“(We) spent a whole day with about 30 to 40 presenters, shuffling around the school to different rooms,” Crane said. “Well, today is like the fourth or fifth Friday of the month. I tried to make it a little more subdued.”
She says students are discovering new careers that interest them every month.
Two fourth-graders, Juhana Garcia Ramirez and Jasius Walker, said their dream is to work in the news industry. They added that their school has a reporter called a technical communicator.
“I love doing it and I love talking to the whole school about school stuff,” García Ramirez added.
Different groups share daily school announcements to help keep students on the right track. And that's one way we're creating new opportunities for our students. Mark Denman Elementary School holds Career Day on the fourth Friday of each month.
