Remember the packaging design egg drop challenge we gave (or had) ID students? Civil engineering students at the Technical University of Munich face a similar challenge, except the eggs are professors .
To pass TUM's Design and Construction 2 course, each student team must design and build a bridge that exceeds a given distance and adheres to height restrictions. The problem is that the bridge must be transported to the site disassembled in standard-sized shipping boxes.
You have to assemble the bridge within the time limit and the bridge must not break during the test. Timber and Building Construction Professor Stephen Winter walks across a bridge during an exam.
an exercise called brücke au der box ('Bridges Ready to Use') has been held annually for 20 years and has resulted in over 1,000 bridge designs.
Professor Winter will elaborate on TUM's holistic approach to education.
“We train engineers for their role in society. Studying is not only about imparting knowledge, but also training for other areas of life. For example, teamwork, reasoning together, It's about discussing what's wrong and what's right. It's also about dealing with failure. Sometimes you have to learn all about it. TUM must continue to strive to educate people throughout their lives, not just in pure theory. ”
This is Germany, so victory can be celebrated with beer.
Below is a video of the latest event. It's in German, but you can turn on English subtitles.

Kudos to the team for coming up with a sustainable design using materials from the event industry.
