A large truck crashed into the Nyangores River in Bomet District, causing the large car to fall and killing four people.
When the deputy police officer swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the truck involved in the accident, his car also fell into the river, but he narrowly escaped death.
The passengers in the unfortunate vehicle are said to have swam to safety, but a woman, a child and two men were unlucky as they drowned in the process.
“A total of three people, two female passengers and one male, died in the accident, and one child is missing. The search for the child continues in the Nyangores River,” said Musa, Bomet Central sub-county police chief.・Mr. Imamai said.
The captain said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Imamai said the body was taken to the Longisa District Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation.
The accident occurred around noon at Tengwek Bridge, which crosses Nyangores Bridge on Siribwet-Meligi Road in Bomet Central Constituency.
Mugango base deputy chief Richard Rotich narrowly escaped death when his car plunged into the river while trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.
“I saw a truck, where the driver appeared to have lost control, lurch on the other side of the road and head towards the bridge. It swerved to avoid a pothole and a head-on collision with a boda boda rider and another vehicle. But it veered off the road and overturned the bridge,” Rotich said.
“Within seconds I realized I was underwater, but the vehicle was trapped in the bushes so it didn't submerge. I slowly opened the door and got out. It's a miracle I survived. ,” Rotich said.
When I came out, I noticed that another saloon vehicle had been swept away by the rapids in the Nyangores River, a short distance from Tenweku Hospital.
It took Bomet District Disaster Management Unit personnel more than two hours to recover the body from the wreckage of the vehicle, which was completely submerged under the waters of the Nyangoles River, which burst its banks during the flood.
The body of one of the victims, a woman, appeared to have been thrown from the car and was the first to be recovered.
Hundreds of residents who had gathered at the scene stood on the sidelines as divers from Bomet County took charge of recovering the bodies from the river. The trunk of the car had to be broken down to access the body.
Police officers manning a makeshift barricade a few meters from the bridge are said to have called in officials from the Bomet County Government's Disaster Management Headquarters.
The truck involved in the accident was towed to Bomet Police Station, but the salon vehicle was still submerged in water at press time after the lifeless body was removed.
