Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Thursday arrested four traffic police officers for allegedly extorting motorists along the Embu-Siakago road.
The police officers, all attached to Itabua Police Station in Embu, were taken to the EACC Integrity Center Police Station for post-arrest processing.
They were subsequently arrested at Kilimani Police Station and are currently pending arraignment in court.
The officers are: Inspector Sammy Cherogoni, Corporal Maurice Mwakachola, Constables Fozia Harake and Constables Adan Mohamed Iman.
”All four had been under surveillance by EACC officials for some time before their arrest today,” an official at the anti-graft watchdog told Citizen Digital.
The arrests come amid an EACC-led crackdown on corrupt traffic police officers who demand bribes and extort money from motorists on major roads.
“Despite the commission carrying out surveillance on several major roads and efforts to combat corruption in the country, what most traffic police officers are doing is no longer bribery but extortion. “There is,” the source added.
