SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — State leaders are celebrating Illinois after seeing an increase in visitors from other countries.
More than 2.16 million international tourists will visit the state in 2023, an increase of 39% from the previous year. These visitors spent approximately $2.7 billion into the Illinois economy, stimulating the economy.
Illinois Tourism leaders said tourism growth is due to strategic marketing efforts, strengthened partnerships and a wide range of unique attractions and experiences that attract international travelers.
“This important achievement highlights the growing global appeal of our great state and the hard work of our partners in the tourism and hospitality industry to make Illinois a world-class destination.” JB・Governor Pritzker said. “Whether you call the Land of Lincoln home or visiting from afar, we welcome everyone who wants to discover all the great things our state and city has to offer.”
The top five countries of origin for visitors include Canada, Mexico, India, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Illinois saw a 40% increase in international visitors.
“The tourism sector plays a critical role in Illinois' economy, creating jobs, driving economic growth, and supporting small businesses and communities across the state,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. . “The record increase in international visitors is a testament to the strength of Illinois' tourism industry and its ability to attract visitors from around the world.”
Overall, 111 million visitors visited the state in 2022 and spent $44 billion.
Officials also note that IPW 2025, the largest travel trade show, is also scheduled to be held in Chicago next year.
