After two trailers that did not feature music from the film, the new film adaptation of Mean Girls was not explicitly marketed to general audiences as a musical.
After a triumphant opening at the box office, Variety reported that Paramount chose not to market the film as a musical in order to “keep audiences away.”
“If you start saying musical, musical, musical, you might turn off the audience,” said Mark Weinstock, the studio's president of global marketing. “I want everyone to have the same excitement.”
Although the film's logo includes the A note from “Mean,” the musical is given “different” treatment, making the inclusion of Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin's music known to a wider audience. The executive said he declined to specify.
“We didn't want to be too quick to say this is a musical, because people tend to treat musicals differently. This movie has a lot of music. Yes, it could be considered a musical, but it appeals to a wider audience. You get the idea.'' [trailers for] Neither “Wonka'' nor “The Color Purple'' are called musicals. The title includes a musical note, so it's a hint without being too pushy. ”
The new film features special appearances by original stars Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, and Lindsay Lohan, but also stars Angourie Rice, Renee Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, and Bebe. New cast members include Wood and Christopher Blainey. , Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Ashley Park.
“Our first teaser was Renee Rapp singing to the camera, 'My name is Regina George.' is not in this movie.'' So that was very helpful for us.Tim was there [Meadows] We put Tina in the slot to show familiarity,” the executive said about bringing the new Mean Girls to the general public.
