LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – The University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law will bestow its highest honor on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor at a ceremony scheduled for February 5, 2025.
The Brandeis Medal and Lecture Series recognizes recipients selected for their dedication to economic, social, or political justice and for advancing the cause of public service in the legal profession.
Sotomayor joins Harry Blackmun, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Sandra Day O'Connor and John Paul Stevens in receiving the medal. Became the first Supreme Court Justice. Sotomayor's commitment to public service reflects many of the values for which Louis D. Brandeis is best known and sets an excellent example for Brandeis Law students and their communities.
Sonia Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954 in the Bronx, New York. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University with her bachelor's degree in 1976, where she is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received the Pine Award, Princeton's highest academic honor. . She became an undergraduate student. She received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she served as editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Sotomayor served as an assistant district attorney in the New York County District Attorney's Office from 1979 to 1984. He then practiced international commercial litigation at Pavia & Harcourt in New York City, where he served as an associate and then a partner from 1984 to 1992.
In 1991, President George HW Bush appointed her to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, where she served from 1992 to 1998. In 1997, she was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where she served from 1998 to 2009. President Barack Obama nominated her to the Supreme Court on May 26, 2009, and she assumed this role on August 8, 2009.
