NAIROBI, Kenya, May 8 — The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has reconnected Kisii County to the power grid after an attack on a substation plunged the county into darkness on Tuesday.
In an unprecedented incident, gangs attacked the Kegati 132/33kV substation owned by KETRACO on Tuesday morning.
KETRACO Managing Director John Matibbo said the transmission company had energized transformer TX1 and loaded four 33kV transmission lines to serve customers.
The line has restored power to the towns of Kisii, Kiamakoma, Kilgoris and Kisii East.
“Following a vandal intrusion on Tuesday’s KETRACO-owned Kegati 132/33kV substation in Kisii County, four output 33kV feeder lines were removed to power KETRACO’s transformer TX1 and serve customers. I am happy to report that we were able to load the load,” he said.
“We would like to thank the residents of the Kisii region for their patience as our engineers work towards the full restoration of normal power supply. KETRACO deeply regrets any inconvenience caused.” added Matibo.
KETRACO said its team is working with Kenya Power to install and terminate power supply cables in Homa Bay that were destroyed by gangs.
The joint team will also repair and restore Kenya Power's transmission transformer 2.
KETRACO called on the public to refrain from any kind of vandalism.
“Any person found to have engaged in any of the above criminal acts under the Act will be liable to a fine of not less than 5 million lice or to imprisonment for 10 years,” Matibo warned.
“The public is urged to report such acts of vandalism to the nearest police station or call the KETRACO hotline 991 (toll-free) or +254 20 4956000,” he appealed.
