While most students work toward a certification as a health care assistant, April Papps is taking a different path in person-centered care.
of New Zealand Health and Wellbeing Certificate – Health Support Area (Level 3) Graduates use the skills and knowledge gained through their studies to pursue careers in law enforcement or health chaplaincy, and to realize their personal interest in reducing the effects of trauma and abuse in their communities.
“I am dedicated to promoting safety and welfare and defending the rights of others. I also have an interest in policing and first responders, and becoming a pastor combines those interests.” ” she explains.
Papps has a diverse background, including working alongside his parents in the motel industry for many years supporting guests and volunteering during crises such as the Christchurch earthquake.
“I've learned to stay calm and collected when things get difficult. Putting myself in other people's shoes and understanding their perspective has been a lifelong habit for me; It came naturally to me because of my upbringing and personal experiences,” she says.
Her health and wellbeing qualifications gained at NZTC add to her ongoing studies in communication, speech therapy and criminal justice.
“I chose to study at NZTC because I felt the Level 3 program would allow me to connect my existing skills to a new path in a challenging environment.
“While some of the content in the program may not be what I want to pursue as a career, it opened my eyes to all areas of health care and helped me reaffirm my purpose and aspirations. It was helpful.”
She said she was encouraged to see that the program included a course on caring for vulnerable clients.
“The teachings on abuse and empathy training really resonated with me. It’s exciting to be part of a program that values such important aspects of care and advocacy.”
Pappus is now applying the knowledge she gained from her studies to care for her elderly parents, helping them manage the challenges associated with their ongoing health conditions.
She hopes to quickly move into a position where she can put her level-headedness and healthcare knowledge into practice and contribute to the care of people and society.
