Sugar Factory, located at 44th Street and 8th Avenue, is offering a special Mother's Day menu starting today that will be out of this world. If you're looking for a place to celebrate your mom, this is definitely the place.
First, the cocktail menu is refreshing and punchy. We tried all four of his signature drinks ($17) and thought it was a great deal. “The Fuzzy Fizz'' tasted like a freshly picked peach and quenched my thirst. “Mixed Berry Gin” brings out the flavor of freshly picked berries and soothes the soul. “Sugar Runner” gives off a tropical New Orleans vibe with dark rum, pineapple, and banana. Last but not least (or first photo) is the Ai Mi Madre, a combination of fresh grapefruit juice, tequila, lime, and sparkling wine. All four of us tried each other's drinks and couldn't decide which one we liked best.
Appetizers include New England Seafood Chowder ($13) with scallops, shrimp, cod and potatoes; This is rich, decadent, and very filling.
For a light meal, try the Field Green Salad ($15). It contains pecans, blue cheese, and strawberries, and is drizzled with sherry vinaigrette. One of my favorite things about Sugar Factory is its size. You will definitely leave not hungry but completely full.
The Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail ($22) is a work of art. Six delicious shrimp and cucumber tossed with spicy tomatoes and onions.
For main dishes, the shrimp scampi penne with garlic toast ($25) was a table favorite. This dish was bursting with lemony sweet butter and shrimp.
I also loved the Seared Honey Mustard Glazed Salmon ($36). Now I'm not a big fan of fish, but after trying this dish I would order it again. The salmon was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. There's no fishy smell here. Also, those vegetables were roasted slightly al dente and the asparagus in particular was great.
Inspired, we tried the Angus Filet & Maine Lobster Surf and Turf ($79). Perfect medium rare. Sugar Factory really knows how to make food. The steak was very tender with a light crust and melted in your mouth perfectly. For lobster we had Eileen, Craig and Roger at 7th Heaven. The only reason I didn't let out a hearty “ah” is because I'm allergic. But eating that amazing asparagus made me feel the same way I did when I ate mashed potatoes. It's amazing when food is done really well and how much the simplest things can enrich your day.
Dessert, Strawberry Cheesecake Waffle ($21), left me purring.
The Strawberry Brownie Shortcake ($21) with ice cream was a perfect match for the rest of the table.
Anthony, my favorite server, made our service perfect, as did managers Amara and Michael.
I love this place and was excited when I walked in to meet producer Pat Addis and fellow critic, playwright, and producer Lauren Yeager. I was so excited that they came and told me how delicious the food was. Sugar Factory doesn't just sell sugar, but it also sells sugar.
If you're looking to treat that special someone in your life, I highly recommend Sugar Factory.
