Questions remain over whether Erik ten Hag will remain at Manchester United beyond the 2023-24 season, with part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe having already begun his overhaul
It’s crunch time for Manchester United, with three league games and a cup final potentially having a big say in what happens this summer.
Erik ten Hag’s future remains the subject of debate, but a strong end to the season could help the manager make his case. That will be anything but easy, though, with title-chasing Arsenal coming to Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils are eighth in the Premier League after a heavy loss against Crystal Palace, but can still qualify for Europe through the league or cup. An FA Cup final victory over Manchester City would guarantee European qualification, but they could make sure before that if they can turn their form around for upcoming league games against Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton.
If Ten Hag is unable to get the results he needs, plenty of managers will continue to be mentioned in connection with the top job at Old Trafford. Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel are two who have attracted plenty of noise, but they’re not the only ones.
There’s also the small matter of the summer transfer window, where United’s finish may dictate the calibre of player available to them. As for outgoings, Jadon Sancho’s form in Dortmund has sparked talk of a permanent return to the German side.

Ten Hag handed warning by Carragher
Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has been warned off using Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal success under a patient board as proof he can emulate the Spaniard at Old Trafford.
Pundit Jamie Carragher has urged caution, writing in The Telegraph: “Although the league form was breaking the wrong records, the cups and Europe were a salvation. In all competitions, Arteta actually won more of his first 100 fixtures than Arsène Wenger.
“That meant amid the setbacks there was always a sense of an ultimate destination. When Arsenal enjoyed good results and performances, you could see the fruits of the work on the training ground. Arsenal took steps back to move forward.
“Manchester United, by contrast, made a move forward last year, but have taken several steps back since.”

Ten Hag on Man Utd future
Erik ten Hag says “common sense” dictates he should be in charge of Manchester United next season.
Ten Hag has been given no assurances by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new United football operations team that he will stay in charge at Old Trafford. United have suffered a chronic injury crisis last season, which has seen them slump to eighth in the table and on course for their worst finish of the Premier League era.
Ten Hag said: “No. I think they [United bosses] have common sense, they seen when you have 32 different backlines, when you lose eight centre-backs, when we see we don’t have a left full-back.
“They know that will have a negative impact on results but we’re still fighting and it’s a huge FA Cup final and we’re still there. It can be a highlight of the season, but we know why we are underperforming. I’m a realistic person, I see this, I analyse and no team would perform with these injuries.”

Ten Hag explains Martinez decision
Erik ten Hag clarified the FA Cup final has factored into his plans when denying Lisandro Martinez’s request to play against Arsenal on Sunday.
“(Martinez) is desperate to play, he misses so much, the team missed him,” the manager told reporters on Friday.
He wants to play but he had three injuries across the season and now he is almost there, injury-free, at the end of the healing process but now he has to get back into team training and into matches.”

Garnacho opens up on debut as anniversary approaches
We’re coming up to two years since Alejandro Garnacho made his senior debut for Manchester United, and the winger has spoken about the emotions of that day.
“Yes, I’ve had some nice moments with the club but I’m never going to forget this one and for me it will always be the most important,” the youngster said as part of United’s first ‘Lifeblood’ film.
“The day I made my debut, the first day that I was given my opportunity and I will always be grateful to the manager and to the club. And for me, it was the finest moment of my career.”

Amrabat agents ‘working on move’
Sofyan Amrabat’s agents are already preparing for the midfielder’s next move as he approaches the end of his Manchester United loan.
Morocco international Amrabat joined on loan from Fiorentina at the end of the summer transfer window, but has been unable to hold down a starting place.
According to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), the midfielder could find himself back in Serie A next season, with AC Milan a possible destination,

Ten Hag not worried about job
Erik ten Hag insisted he’s confident of remaining in charge at Manchester United because the club’s owners “have common sense”.
“You see when we have 32 different back lines, we’ve used 13 partnerships in centre half, when they see we don’t have a left back, they know that will have a negative impact on results,” he told reporters.
“It’s a huge FA Cup final. We are happy to be there. It can be a highlight for this season. We know the reasons we are underperforming is because of the injuries. No team will perform when you have so many injuries in key areas.”

Arsenal team news for United clash
Bukayo Saka and Takehiro Tomiyasu are doubts for Arsenal as they prepare to face Manchester United.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said “we’ll have to see” after the final training session, with winger Saka and defender Tomiyasu needing to prove their fitness.
Arsenal can keep up the pressure on title rivals Manchester City with a victory, while City themselves play more than 24 hours before the Gunners against Fulham.

Ten Hag confirms trio have trained ahead of Arsenal
Manchester United could welcome back Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay for Sunday’s match against Arsenal.
Manager Erik ten Hag confirmed at his pre-match press conference that all three had trained ahead of the game, though it remains to be seen whether all three start.
Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez aren’t expected to be involved, though.
England international Mount started against Crystal Palace after recently returning from injury, but has suffered another setback in the lead-up to the Arsenal meeting.
Ten Hag also indicated Martinez won’t be risked despite asking to play, with United hoping to call upon the centre-back for the FA Cup final.

United legend Cole thinks Casemiro exit will be player’s decision
If Casemiro leaves Old Trafford before the end of his contract, it will have to be the player’s decision.
That’s according to former United striker Andy Cole, who told Betfred he’d choose whether or not to stick around if he was in a similar situation and wanted to remain at the club.
“Casemiro will make that decision at the end of the season and there’s no doubt that he’ll sit down with the club and make a decision based on what’s best for the club and the player,” Cole told Betfred.
“He signed a four-year contract didn’t he? If I signed a four-year contract and I had another two years on it and I wanted to stick around, then that’s up to me.
“If Manchester United want him to leave, then they’re going to have to decide whether they’re going to pay him to go. Ultimately, this is what happens when you give out long-term contracts.”

Tuchel awaits UEFA decision
Manchester United-linked manager Thomas Tuchel could be banned from his first European game in charge if he opts for an Old Trafford move.
According to The Sun, Tuchel could face punishment for his comments after Bayern Munich’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid, with UEFA expected to decide next week whether to proceed with further action.
Any European ban would carry over to future jobs. However, United’s own involvement in European competition next term is anything but certain.

Garnacho backed for United award
Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes Alejandro Garnacho deserves the club’s Player of the Year award for his efforts this season.
“Garnacho was in and out of the team towards the back end of last season but now he’s nailed down a starting spot,” Pallister told BetVictor, describing the Argentine and team-mate Kobbie Mainoo as United’s ‘big plusses’ this term.
“He’s scoring goals and creating chances and he’s got great energy. His footballing brain has improved and he looks a lot stronger. I think he’s probably the favourite to be United’s Player of the Year.
“Mainoo has been incredible. He has suffered a bit of a dip since his full England debut where he was absolutely exceptional, which you have to expect from young players but he’s a real star in the making.
“His England debut was a joy to watch and he played like somebody who had 50 caps under his belt – he stole the show.”

Parris rejected multi-million deal to play cup final
Man Utd women star Nikita Parris’ desire to play in the upcoming FA Cup final was so high that she was willing to turn down a big-money approach from NWSL side North Carolina Courage.
England international Parris could have left United in a club record sale, while securing a multi-million three year contract for herself.
That would have required her to move before the end of the WSL season, though, something she was unwilling to do.
United’s women have a chance to win their first major trophy when they take on Spurs on Sunday, and Parris clearly wants to give herself a chance of making history.

Former United target Rodriguez set for Barcelona
Guido Rodrigugez is a name which has frequently featured in Manchester United transfer round-ups, but the Argentine now looks set for Barcelona.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Catalan club still need FFP approval before the move can be signed off, but he’s poised to join when his Real Betis contract expires over the summer.
Rodriguez, 30, has 29 Argentina cups and played once for his country in their run to glory at the 2022 World Cup.

Saudi still a possibility for Casemiro
Manchester United’s pursuit of Joao Neves could be funded by a summer exit for Casemiro.
The Brazilian has been off the boil this season, and Goal reports a suitable bid from the Saudi Pro League could see him offloaded this summer.
United are unlikely to recoup the sum they paid Real Madrid to sign Casemiro in 2022, but getting his hefty wages off the bill could become a priority.

Fabregas expects comfortable Arsenal win
Former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas doesn’t believe his old club will have too much trouble winning at Old Trafford on Sunday.
“I can see Arsenal being too strong for them at the moment,” the Spaniard told The Premier League Podcast ahead of the title contenders’ trip north.
“I do think Arsenal play by memory, they are confident, they believe, they have the experience. They have grown over the last year, they improve, so I do think Arsenal will win that game comfortably.
“I will not say easily because United is United and the history, at the end of the day, the badge on the chest, we need to respect that and Old Trafford is Old Trafford. But again, I consider Arsenal are too strong at the moment.”

‘No negotiation’ for United target Neves
Benfica are not prepared to sell Joao Neves for less than his release clause, but a hefty bid from Manchester United could yet see them land the Portuguese youngster.
That would mean €100m for the 19-year-old, but reports in Portugal (via Sport Witness) suggest United might indeed be prepared to go that high.
Agent Jorge Mendes is considered to be a key ingredient. However, it should also be acknowledged that Neves has previously been urged to stay in Portugal and develop in the Champions League, at least for one more season.

Another target in defence
Injuries have left United with a backline few would have expected at the start of the season with Jonny Evans and Casemiro forming an unwanted partnership.
That sees the Red Devils linked with adding some reinforcements this summer. Reports on the continent suggest United will looked to add Juventus star Gleison Bremer and have declared him to be a ‘top target’.
Earlier, a swap deal including Greenwood was touted but that now appears to be unlikely.

Graeme Souness’ Sir Jim Ratcliffe conversation
Graeme Souness has revealed he previously held a conversation with Sir Jim Ratcliffe about buying a football club. The former football manager said he talked to the United stakeholder five years ago when Ratcliffe was reluctant to get into a project.
Souness said: “I can vividly remember him saying: ‘I haven’t got time to buy a club and develop it’. He was talking about Fulham and he had a season ticket at Chelsea.”
The INEOS chief must have changed his mind with the work required this summer.

Sancho verdict
Former Borussia Dortmund and Celtic midfielder Paul Lambert wants to see Jadon Sancho sticking with the German side moving forwards. The former Villa boss cannot see a reason why the winger would want to return to Old Trafford.
“At Dortmund, Sancho has gone into a really good dressing room, a good culture with good guys and he gets respect,” he told Betway.
“At Man Utd it could have been an absolute nightmare for him. He may have not liked the way it was or it might not have been what he thought it would be.
“Being back at Dortmund, with some of the players that were there when he left. He’s playing with one of the biggest clubs in European football without a shadow of doubt.
“Why would he want to go back to United? He’s in the Champions League semi-final, he could be a Champions League winner.”

Pallister makes Ten Hag claim
The former Man United defender has suggested that the club’s Dutch coach will still be plotting a way forward with the hierarchy.
Speaking to BetVictor, Pallister said: “This year has been really tough and losing the number of games Manchester United have is always going to put pressure on the manager. The club seems to be stuck in a cycle of sacking a manager every two years and they can’t carry on doing that.
“A decision has to be made at the highest level, but they’ll be working with Ten Hag, talking to him about his vision. He’s talked about bringing young players through and that has happened with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Now a conversation needs to be had between Ten Hag and INEOS to plot a path going forward.”

Tuchel to Man United claim
It has been claimed that Manchester United missing out on European football would not deter Thomas Tuchel from joining the Red Devils this summer.
Tuchel has revealed that he does have a love for the Premier League when asked about his future and Fabrizio Romano suggests the former Blues boss could be open to more than one option.
The transfer guru said: “Still, for sure Tuchel would be more than happy to coach Man United even if they’re without elite European football – he would be really open to returning to England in general, he loved it there. So, it depends on the clubs, but he would be really open to that possibility of managing again in the Premier League.”

Casemiro talks
There has been no shortage of talk over Casemiro’s Manchester United future in recent weeks, with the Brazilian midfielder much criticised.

United plan offer
Record, per Sport Witness, reports that United are now targeting Benfica star Joao Neves this summer as they look to bolster their midfield, and that an offer is soon expected. With interest in Antonio Silva in recent months, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils could now target both players. Benfica are said to want to retain the services of Neves for the moment however.

Thomas Tuchel is perfect for Manchester United
Mirror’s chief sport writer Andy Dunn has provided his verdict on Thomas Tuchel and it’s emphatic.
“Bayern followers will not buy into the idea that their side’s demise in Madrid was the result of Tuchel’s shortcomings. And the sort of relationship Tuchel can enjoy with a fanbase, his charisma, his personality, is why he WOULD be a suitable Manchester United manager.”

Greenwood interest
It doesn not seem likely that Mason Greenwood will remain a United player this summer such is the interest in his signature. There has been talk of a return to Getafe, and Barcelona have been touted but he could perhaps see a move closer to home. Two Premier League clubs are interested a move for the forward.
A move abroad is said to be more likely however.

Barcelona to make decision
The Catalan club are set to make a decision on the future of Mikayil Faye in the coming transfer window. The defender has been linked to Arsenal and Manchester United already but it is still in the early stages of progress, though there could be ‘movement soon’ according to Fabrizio Romano.
Barcelona could decide to keep the youngster but they could perhaps cash in with the likes of Juventus and Liverpool also linked to making a move.

United look at Onana replacement
Marca claim that United are looking to make a move in goal after being unconvinced by Onana’s first season.
They suggest club chiefs are targeting Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro. The glovesman, who is said to have a £60m release clause, has kept 43 clean sheets in the last two seasons. Impressive.
06:49Scott Trotter
It’s not all about trophies
Should Erik ten Hag depart this summer, United won’t simply be focused on managers who have delivered trophies to find his replacement according to The Telegraph.
That could be a boost for any Gareth Southgate fans.
Talksport report there has been initial contact between United and Thomas Tuchel’s advisers however.

Early transfer blow
With United looking to work smarter in the transfer market under their new hierarchy, it remains to be seen the profiles which they will target. One player linked has been impressive youngster Estevao Willian of Palmeiras.
It seems United are behind in that race however as Fabrizio Romano reports Chelsea already have a verbal deal in place.
“Understand Chelsea have reached verbal agreement with Willian Estevao on personal terms,” he said. “Told initial bid still to be sent but it will be around 32 million euros plus add-ons, as talks with Palmeiras will follow.”

“The shirt can be heavy”
Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher are in agreement over why “brilliant” Jadon Sancho has failed at Man United. The duo discussed the winger’s form at Dortmund and could only come up with the conclusion that things have not fit at Old Trafford.
“It doesn’t feel the right fit at Manchester United. And that’s not just for him, that’s for a lot of players. At certain clubs, you just feel more yourself,” said Carragher.
Henry added: “It’s not easy sometimes. The shirt can be heavy, the expectation.”

Ferdinand’s Tuchel chat
Thomas Tuchel has been linked with Manchester United and club legend Rio Ferdinand caught up with him ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final defeat against Real Madrid.
Ferdinand was at the Bernabeu working as a pundit for TNT Sports as Bayern lost 4-3 to Real on aggregate and he greeted Tuchel before kick-off, with the pair sharing an embrace and a few words.
When asked about their interaction, Ferdinand explained: “I just said good luck to him, he’s so relaxed, he’s such a calm character, you’d never know it’s a semi-final and one of his last opportunities to win a trophy.”
Fellow TNT Sports pundit Steve McManaman then asked: “And what about the Manchester United job?” Ferdinand then jokingly responded: “That was the final part of the talk, where are you going?”

Ten Hag’s biggest problem
Manchester United ‘s coaching staff believe there is a lack of a vocal presence in the dressing room – which has contributed to their decline this term.
The Red Devils lost for the 13th time in the Premier League when they were hammered at Crystal Palace on Monday night. The club now face the threat of missing out on European football with those inside the camp noting that the group is quieter.
That has been attributed to the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who has missed the majority of the season. The Argentinean has been sidelined for months but was renowned as a vocal figure in the dressing room and his absence has been noted as a reason for their inconsistencies.
Whilst the World Cup winner is not the only vocal player, his presence is seen as vital in creating a winning mentality and driving the squad on, reports the Guardian. Martínez has played only five times since September 20 having been a regular in his debut campaign.

Ex-Man Utd star released
Manchester United academy graduate Tyler Blackett is on the lookout for a new club after parting company with Rotherham United following their relegation from the Championship.
The 30-year-old defender joined the Red Devils at the tender age of eight and went on to feature for England at youth level from the Under-16s through to the U21s. He would not, however, play regularly for United.
Despite Blackett’s dearth of first-team opportunities, he was still held in high regard by Louis van Gaal, United’s manager at the time. And the Dutchman even predicted that the centre-half, who can also play left-back had the potential to become a club great.

Scholes shares Antony theory
Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes thought Antony may have been criticising manager Erik ten Hag in his post-match chat with Mason Mount on Monday night.
United winger Antony was seen covering his mouth as he spoke to team-mate Mount moments after the 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace. “He is saying something to Mason Mount he is obviously not happy with,” Scholes said.
“Mason Mount seems the quietest out of the three of them. What’s that going to do, I didn’t see any of them communicating on the football pitch. That doesn’t look good. I don’t think that’s good for the manager.
“People are obviously talking and saying things he [Antony] doesn’t agree with. When he’s putting those three fingers up, maybe he’s saying we should be having three in midfield, why don’t we have three there?
“I don’t know, we have no idea because we can’t lip read. But there is obviously a problem there and they obviously disagree with something the manager is doing.”

Hojlund “behaving childishly”
Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has accused Rasmus Hojlund of “behaving really childishly”.
“If we’re going to talk about Hojlund, he’s in a very bad place at the moment,” Parker told Tipsbladet. “He’s behaving really childishly at the moment, and it seems like his teammates have had a negative influence on him because they also behave that way. He’s a big guy, but he keeps throwing himself, and it’s annoying to watch.
“The fans in Manchester are also talking about being irritated with Hojlund because he’s gotten into a rhythm where he blames others for not going well for him at the moment. It’s just important to remember that the whole team is playing terribly. It’s not just Højlund’s fault, but he’s part of the problem.”

Sancho’s success a bonus
Jadon Sancho’s progress to the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund has been an unexpected bonus for Manchester United.
Not because there is a route back for Sancho at his parent club, but because the winger’s transfer market value has soared by him reaching the final. If Sancho is able to lift the Champions League trophy at Wembley on June 1, United are likely to recoup a significant chunk of the £73million they paid Dortmund for him in the summer of 2021.
Despite his rebirth since joining Dortmund on loan in January, United still plan to cash in on Sancho and sell him to the highest bidder this summer. Even if Erik ten Hag is replaced as United boss, the club’s stance is that both parties would be better off if Sancho moved on.

Timely injury returns
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will be hopeful of having five of his Red Devils stars back in time for Arsenal.
The 13-times Premier League champions take on the Gunners on Sunday as they bid to recover from a 4-0 drubbing against Crystal Palace. United will need to earn an upset against Mikel Arteta’s side if they want to put pressure on Chelsea and Newcastle in the race for sixth place.
Being able to welcome key players back would come as a boost for Ten Hag. The Dutchman lamented the club’s injury situation ahead of defeat to the Eagles.

Sancho hits out
Jadon Sancho has hit out at those who didn’t believe in him after helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final.
Dortmund picked up a 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night to get past Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on aggregate. Mats Hummels headed in the only goal as the German side produced a rear-guard action and rode their luck to upset the odds and book a place in the final against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
Sancho started both legs for Edin Terzic’s side and appears to have rediscovered a love of football since re-joining Dortmund on loan from Manchester United in January. The 24-year-old winger left United under a cloud after a very public falling out with Erik ten Hag and Dortmund’s run in the Champions League has given him the chance to send a message back to Old Trafford.

Ruthless Ratcliffe
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has brutally told Manchester United staff to ‘seek alternative employment’ if they are not willing to work on club premises.
The Old Trafford co-owner has looked to put a stop to homeworking in a bid to boost productivity as the club continues to go through an overhaul. The Guardian report that in a meeting, the INEOS founder made his position clear and told attendees: “If you don’t like it, please seek alternative employment.”
United had utilised a flexible work-from-home policy following the Covid-19 pandemic but Ratcliffe revealed this would come to an end during an all-hands meeting which saw people attend in person and via video call. Ratcliffe had received a tour of Old Trafford and Carrington and cited email traffic statistics to illustrate why he expected workers in the office.
The 27.7 per cent stakeholder explained that in one of his companies which experimented with working from home on Fridays, they saw email traffic drop by 20 per cent. It is an outcome that has left Ratcliffe happy to offer the ultimatum.

Lineker reignites feud with Ferguson
Gary Lineker has said he “doesn’t care” what Sir Alex Ferguson thinks.
Speaking on his podcast, the Rest is Football, Lineker was asked to choose between Sir Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola and Sir Bobby Robson.
He said: “And I thought to myself ‘right, I would never want to, I couldn’t possibly get rid of Bobby Robson, I just wouldn’t’. So I think I’d go Pep Guardiola (keep), Bobby Robson (bench) and then Sir Alex Ferguson (sell), because I never got on with him anyway so I don’t care what he thinks.”
When pressed by Micah Richards about not getting on with Ferguson, Lineker added: “He’s had a few jibes at me over the years. He was a bit anti-BBC I think, but anyway.”

Tuchel drops Man Utd hint
Thomas Tuchel has dropped a hint that he would like to return to the Premier League this summer.
Tuchel is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season, regardless of what happens in the Champions League, and will be available for other clubs. He is known to interest Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is looking to replace Erik ten Hag.
“I’d rather not answer but it is no secret that I loved it at Chelsea, I loved it in England,” he told TNT Sports when asked about his future. “I loved it in the Premier League for sure, it was a very, very special time and I remember it very well.”
