This award recognizes pig veterinarians who have achieved outstanding results.
Matt Allason of Holden Farms in Northfield, Minn., will receive the 2024 Science in Practice Award at the Leman Pig Conference in September, according to a recent press release. This annual award recognizes pork producers who use science to solve critical health and production problems for pork producers.
As a Holden Farms veterinarian, Mr. Allason leads a talented team of veterinarians at one of the largest family-owned pig systems in the country. He is internationally renowned for his expertise in disease control, health and production. Allason's skills as a teacher, mentor, and leader are also highly recognized.
“I am fortunate to work for a company that supports field research and understands the value research brings to companies,” he said. “We can work together to answer questions specific to Holden Farms systems and pig health.”
His team uses multiple tools to find solutions, including health improvement plans, biosecurity principles, and disease eradication plans that are supported by both experiments and field-based research.
Allerson said the use of scientific principles is very important.
“We need to identify and remove extraneous or confounding variables that may influence the results. Small differences in performance can have large economic implications,” he said. .
His passion for science, livestock research, and summarizing data led to a career in veterinary medicine and several advanced degrees.
“These experiences helped us remove emotions and opinions when trying to answer questions about animal health and performance. Instead, we turned our emotions and feelings into research questions. ” said Allason.

Allerson earned her DVM in 2009, her Master of Public Health in 2010, and her Ph.D. All from the University of Minnesota in 2013. As a student and practicing veterinarian, Arason has authored or co-authored 20 peer-reviewed publications and nearly 30 abstracts and conference proceedings articles.
