A Mombasa court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 30 years in prison for pouring acid on his ex-girlfriend's face, causing her permanent blindness.
Senior Resident Judge Gladys Olimo made the ruling, highlighting the irreparable harm caused to 23-year-old Fatuma Kaying.

According to The Nation newspaper, the court ruled that despite the convict, Mohammed Mwalandu Kombe, denying the charges and claiming self-defense, saying he only poured liquid soap on her when she attacked him with a rock. They found his defense inconsistent and found him guilty.
“In this context, the court agreed with the state that this case required a punitive sentence. As a result, Mr. Kombe was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The right to appeal is within 14 days. ,” Olimo said.
How was Fatuma Kaying's eyes influenced?
The verdict was based on a medical report showing that the victim's conjunctiva was infected, red and swollen, his upper eyelid was lacerated and his vision was permanently damaged.
Additionally, Kombe destroyed Kaying's mobile phone during the altercation, which was valued at Ksh 6,000.
Kombe appealed for leniency, citing his young family, but the court remained unchanged, emphasizing the seriousness of his crime and the need for a custodial sentence.
