Lions Eye Donation Services (LEDS) has worked around the clock to coordinate thousands of eye donations for more than 30 years, with nurses playing a critical role.
At the core of LEDS is a small team of donor coordinators. Donor Coordinators travel throughout Victoria to discuss eye donation and full consent with donor families, perform eye tissue recovery, and deliver valuable gifts to her LEDS in preparation for potential sight-saving surgery. Transplant coordinator and registered nurse Gavin de Laurie says working at the eye bank, which is part of a research organization, is incredible.

Gavin's passion for helping others first inspired him to become a nurse.
“My mother is also a nurse and introduced me to some of her favorite patients,” he says.
Prior to coming to LEDS, Gavin had a fulfilling career as a nurse, working in neurosurgery, intensive care, and emergency departments at Austin Hospital.
