The new owner of one of Hobart's finest homes has a special connection to it.
Michael Ebeid AM and Roland Howlett have bought the sprawling riverside mansion Demi Rivière for $6.3 million, making it Tasmania's most expensive home sale this year.
Mr. Howlett was born and brought up in Howrah.
Abi Freeman and Brad Stevens of Knight Frank sold the 8,125sqm property to the couple.
“Mr Howlett grew up in Howrah and was always fascinated by the place, where he used to deliver newspapers to people's homes on his bicycle from an early age,” Mr Freeman said.

Mrs Freeman has sold a number of Tasmania's most expensive homes this year, including a Sandy Bay waterfront home sold for $4.3 million and a Mawela Street home listed for “expressions of interest of $5 million or more” . The selling price is not disclosed at this time.
She said there had always been an appetite for luxury homes in Tassie and 2023 was no different.
“There will always be a market for quality housing in desirable locations,” she says.
“Due to their rarity in the market, these properties are less affected by economic factors.”

Mrs Freeman expects 2024 to be a big year for the city's Top End.
“We expect the prestige market to have a very strong year,” she said.
“The $2.5 million and above prestige market will continue to see many luxury properties transacted in 2023 as Hobart remains attractive to this buyer group, less affected by rising interest rates and cost of living pressures. I did.
“We predict more people will move to Hobart because of the global climate extremes, our lifestyle and the beauty of our city that is difficult to emulate.”

Five homes sold in the $4 million range, others in the mid-to-high $3 million range, and there were many multi-million dollar sales that didn't make this year's top 10 list.
Real Estate Association of Tasmania director Michael Walsh said it was only recently that the $3 million sale became Tasmania's highest price of the year.
“When things change, you know they change a lot. And forever,” he said.
“It’s like the leap from two-way radio to cell phones.
“And that doesn’t include the unpaid prices being paid to farms across the state.”

Prop Track economic research director Cameron Kusher said with so many people moving from the interstate to Tasmania in recent years, the top end of the market was getting higher and higher.
“Sales over $6 million won't put you in the top 10 in Sydney or Melbourne, but in some years it might be among the top sales in Brisbane,” he said.
“For $3 million to $4 million you can buy on the highly regarded Sandy Bay waterfront. When compared to prices in Melbourne or Sydney, similar properties could be worth tens of millions.”

In addition to this year's Best of list, there were a number of other notable property sales where homes were used as accommodation or were built on 100 hectares of land.
Among them was Maylands on Swanston Road, which sold for $5.8 million. And The Woodlands on Bruny Island was reportedly purchased by Jean Cameron for $6.66 million.
Notable farm sales include the Rockthorpe Estate in Cressey for $30 million, Stonehenge for $25 million and Reedy Station on King Island for $22.66 million.
The 4,353-hectare Hermitage estate is back on the market for the first time in 32 years and is currently 'for recruitment'.
