NAIROBI, Kenya, May 7 – Clinker manufacturer Semtech has sought the consent of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) environmental watchdog to build a clinker plant in Kitui County.
Semtech, which has since submitted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Report (EIA) to NEMA, aims to install a 5,500 watt thermally engineered power generation line in Mwingi.
“The need for this EIA study is to predict the potential impacts of the proposed project and strengthen its positive impact on coexistence and sustainability as the proponent proposes to expand into clinker production line. while proposing viable mitigation measures for negative impacts,” the report says. To some extent.
Approval of the Kitui-based factory would confirm Debki's dominance in the cement industry.
Devki is on a charm offensive to expand its presence in Kenya.
Just last month, President William Ruto commissioned the construction of a new Semtech Cevit clinker factory in West Pokot, estimated to cost Sh45 billion.
The plant will produce an estimated 6,000 tonnes of clinker every day, with an annual capacity of 2 million tonnes, just enough for the East African region, said chairman Narendra Raval.
Cement magnate Raval maintained that his set of industries would have a far-reaching impact, especially through job creation for Kenyans living in the area.
Clinker, typically composed of calcium silicate, calcium aluminate, and ferrite, is an important ingredient in cement production and is formed by heating limestone.
