The Minnesota Timberwolves may be off to a historic start in the open Western Conference, but that's because President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly and the team's front office are actively working to improve the team for the 2024 NBA. That doesn't mean there aren't any. Trading deadline.
This year's deadline is Thursday, February 8th at 2:00 PM Central Time.
Keep in mind that Connelly has been very active at the trade deadline since he first took over as chief executive of the Denver Nuggets in 2013. Connelly executed two trades in both 2014 and 2015. One transaction in 2016. There were two trades in 2017. There was one transaction in 2018. Two trades in 2020 (including a four-team mega-deal with the Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Rockets). Two trades in 2021. The trade was made nearly a month before the 2022 deadline. And last season, they made one of the best trades in recent NBA memory when they moved D'Angelo Russell in exchange for Mike Conley and Nickell Alexander Walker. three One of them was used by the Timberwolves to move up to select Leonard Miller in the 2023 NBA Draft.
So only year Connery I haven't done it The trade was made before the 2019 deadline. That's no surprise, since that season the Nuggets jumped from ninth place in the West (an unusual record of 46 wins and 36 losses) to second place (54 wins and 28 losses) in the 2017-18 season. Why did Connery choose to never make waves? However, they lost in the first round of the playoffs to the DeMar DeRozan/LaMarcus Aldridge San Antonio Spurs team.
This year, Mr. Connelly and his company have limited assets to work with.
Minnesota has five tradeable second-round picks, starting with the 2024 pick, which is the least favorable of the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies' second-round picks (possibly Memphis' (right of nomination) is included. They could also move second-round picks in 2025 (via the Utah Jazz) and 2026 (to the worst-favored Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, or San Antonio Spurs), as well as in 2028 and 2030. could also move their own second-round pick.
The Timberwolves cannot trade a first-round pick, per the Stepien Rule, which prohibits teams from trading two consecutive future first-round picks (e.g., during the 2023-24 season). trade for first-round picks in 2026 and 2027).
why?
Minnesota will send first-round picks in 2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029 (top five protected) and a first-round pick to Utah in 2026 as part of the package that acquired Rudy Gobert. He also gained the right to exchange picks. NBA teams can only trade his seven draft picks in advance, so his 2030 NBA Draft will be the furthest in the future that teams can change their future picks. Once the 2024 NBA Draft concludes, Minnesota will be able to use its 2031 first-round pick in a trade if it wishes.
In addition to picks, the Timberwolves also have players who will be paid variable salaries as their contracts expire.
- Kyle Anderson ($9.2 million)
- Shake Milton ($5 million)
- Troy Brown Jr. ($4 million)
Minnesota also has two young players they could send out as sweeteners or salary fillers in potential deals, as well as Josh Minott and Wendell Moore Jr.
