The Academic Staff Association of Research Institutions (ASURI) is calling on domestic research institutions to become performance-oriented and results-oriented.
ASURI Executive Director, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, stated this at a joint press conference with the Civil Society Coalition for Research Funding and National Transformation Strategy in Abuja.
As part of establishing the health of research and development institutes (RDIs), he said their leadership would evaluate research institutes and institutions within their jurisdiction by sending delegations to monitor and observe developments. He said he has started the process of
Ndubuaku said the union passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the Federal Industrial Research Institute Oshodi (FIIRO), which he said was a positive development.
He said FIIRO Director-General Dr. Jumai Tutwa has undertaken diverse and positive initiatives since his appointment, ranging from his achievements to those currently underway.
“Dr. Tutuwa has taken a bold step in repositioning and restoring FIIRO’s position as Nigeria’s foremost research institution, with FIIRO achieving the number one position at the 2023 Science, Technology and Innovation Expo.”
She called on other institutions to follow in her footsteps, saying many others were doing well despite the constraints.
The ASURI scribe lamented that despite the importance, positive impact and benefits of research institutes, insufficient funds were allocated to research institutes in the country.
