As an industry association, World Steel has a strong focus on sustainability. Supporting our members to improve the safety, health and well-being of all workers in our industry is a key element of our sustainability program.
In our industry, safety is more than just a priority or a set of rules; it is an essential part of how we do business and reflects the complex interactions between people, systems, and technology. It starts with each of us. With this in mind, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the significance of World Steel Day for Safety and Health.
World Steel Safety and Health Day is a poignant reminder of our collective commitment to protecting the health of our employees. This day is dedicated to raising awareness, sharing best practices and reaffirming our commitment to safety and health excellence across the global steel industry. This annual event highlights the role safety plays in our industry and emphasizes the need for continuous improvement.
At WorldSteel, we are focused on providing our members and industry with practical recommendations and guidance to create safer and healthier workplaces.
Together, we have driven improvements and positively impacted injury reduction and health within our industry. Despite this improvement, tragically serious and fatal events still occur. But by listening to employees, learning from successes and failures, taking proactive steps, and leveraging available resources, we can take our industry's performance to the next level.
We are pleased to introduce you to the valuable resources WorldSteel provides to support our safety and health goals.
We have four main focus areas for safety and health: Safety Culture and Leadership, Process Safety Management, Occupational Safety Management, and Occupational Health Management. This year we will be publishing a publication on the latter. The Fundamentals of Occupational Health covers physical and mental health and sets out six fundamentals of occupational health that, if properly managed, will help protect the health of everyone working in the steel production value chain. I am. Next year, a publication on occupational safety management is scheduled to be released and this series will conclude.
Last year, we were very proud to publish the first public report on the state of safety and health performance in the global steel industry. Our data reports, now released annually, assert that openness and transparency are key to improving business performance, and our data reports report on a range of health and safety performance indicators, from mortality analysis to sickness absence. It details a comprehensive overview.
In recent years, we have partnered with leaders in the safety equipment industry to host a series of webinars addressing important safety topics. These sessions covered working at height with 3M and gassing and asphyxiation with Dräger. This year, we are partnering with ISN to host a webinar series on contractor safety, with the aim of strengthening safety standards across the supply chain.
These initiatives highlight our commitment to fostering a safety-conscious culture and equipping our leaders and employees with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively reduce risk. By sharing insights, collaborating with industry experts and leveraging innovative solutions, we can continue to drive positive change and protect the well-being of everyone working in our industry.
Having only recently joined worldsteel as the Health and Safety Manager, I am filled with optimism and determination as we embark on this journey with worldsteel. With your continued support and commitment, we are confident that we can create a safer and healthier workplace for everyone.
On this day, I want to say to our members: Let's continue to focus on safety and health and work together to ensure a healthier and safer workplace for everyone.
