LUDHIANA: A fire broke out at a garment factory in Saidan Chowk near Brahanpuri area of the old city on Thursday night, reportedly caused by a short circuit. No loss of life was reported from the fire, which was extinguished by firefighters after two hours. The unit was located in a narrow alley surrounded by a maze of power lines, forcing emergency workers to park fire engines on the main road. According to statements made by the factory owner to fire department officials, he was informed about the incident by an employee. By the time she arrived on the scene, the flames had spread to the first floor, where the string was stored. The machines on the first and third floors were said to be safe. One of the officials claimed that he had to go to Sunder Nagar fire station to replenish the tender as there was no fire protection equipment in the unit. Meanwhile, local residents who had gathered in large numbers expressed concerns that the fire could spread to adjacent buildings. The fire brigade also claimed that they were not using the fire hydrants installed in the market. In response, officials said drawing water from hydrants would require shutting down major supply lines, which would consume time and resources. The fire brigade said they managed to douse the fire with the help of tender vehicles. It is pertinent to mention that fire hydrants have been installed at more than 25 places including Daresh Road, Hindi Bazaar, Chawal Bazaar, Dar Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, Saidan Chowk and Madhopuri. These hydrants are usually inspected before Diwali and are rarely used by the fire department.
